BLT sandwich: on the way to the 9am lecture wanting a quick coffee
- quick, easy, stress free, traditional
Sam is a 1st year student in her 2nd week at university. She is stressed and frazzled with the change from her small high school in Westport. Overwhelmed with the work she has been assigned Sam decides to get a coffee and before her morning class to try calm her nerves as Alex always does. She approaches the long line and clumsy stands out of anyone's way avoiding the older lectures and student. She can't see the board so she makes her rushed choice at the register. She looks around hoping she may see someone from class but has no luck so sits awkwardly at an empty table in front of the bar to wait. Her drink is called and she struggles through the passerby's, happy to finally be able to leave with her flat white. Which is cold. leaving her just as stressed as she entered except now she's disappointed too.
Club Sandwich - the mature student who has brought their own lunch.
- clean, organised, comfortable, organised.
- seat me, include me, care for me, protect me, warm, me.
Its started raining again and Karyn needs somewhere to sit and have a chat with the girls to eat their pre-packed lunches. They duck into tussock just as it starts to pour and luckily snag a table in the corner near the window which beside having a few crumbs and a brown paper bag on it it's not as unclean as the last time they were here. The lunch time environment a competition of noises and people. Karyn a bit upset, she was really keen on sitting on the couches as she finds the seats uncomfortable but in the crowded place they are always taken. Karyn pulls out her club sandwiches proudly, she made them for her dinner party last night and had left overs. The girls chatter and do a bit of people watching as they wait for their food to settle and the rain to calm before heading off to class or home in Karyn's case.
Burger: the studier
- content, concentrate, confident, occupied, sturdy
care for me, feed me, inspire me, motivate me,
Clark is a extroverted 3rd year student who is used to the tussock environment yet still feels out of place due to the cluttered feel of the room. He likes to be surrounded by people and but the unorganized chaos of tussock is not hospitable.
Clark need space to kill time before his afternoon lectures so has decided to do some studying as he can't see anyone he knows in the crowd of people. Being on a budget and seeing they have a meal of the day the decision is easy, and Clark loves lasagna. But there is only two left and by the time it's his turn to order they are all gone, instead he orders a burger remembering that winning $10 scratchy from earlier.
Retreating to one of the free chairs he pulls out his study material while the burger is prepared. Clark is frustrated at the irregular music and the irritating fact the volume is never the same, after a hour of disjoined study tussock empties and Clark is left in the quiet mumble with the violently energetic music. His time at tussock was inefficient leaving him feeling drained and unmotivated, Clark drags himself to the next class with regretting his time at tussock he could have spent at the local maccas that at least would have been a regular environment
Croissant: the external old couple come in for a bite.
- exotic, original, uncommon, fancy,
- feed me, include me, seat me, comfort me, separate me, respect me, relax me, energize me
Colin and Shirley arrive at tussock cafe feeling tired and a bit overwhelmed by all the young people's noise. Having experience with Tussock they know not to come at midday so have come for a early lunch after exploring the lovely exhibition in the old museum. Colin who swears he hates chocolate orders a chocolate topped caramel slice, Shirley gets chips for them to share and a croissant. The couple easily find a seat before the midday rush and settle themselves in by the window to watch the students pass by.
As the students and lectures start to fill the space the couple enjoy the sudden increase in energy the cafe takes on, the couple wait for it to settle before struggling their way out from the maze of bags and people to the next place on the to do list today. The experience has left the couple feeling energised but old due to the difficulty of maneuverability, Shirley mentions that maybe they will walk into the city next time.
